The itinerary
leaves from the from the first Monferrato hills – ad
precisely from Ca’ San Sebastiano in Castel San Pietro di
Camino, and leads through the rice fields till Principato di
Lucedio
|
|
|
After Lucedio we
go towards the imposing Fortezza di Verrua, ancient theatre
of a long siege from the part of the French to the Savoia
army.
|
|
We go uphill
towards Castello del Luogo (or Brusasco Castle) |
|
After the castle,
we turn towards Cavagnolo where we can stop at Abbazia di
Santa Fede. |
|
We arrive in
Cocconato, the so called ‘Monferrato Riviera’ thanks to its
beautiful position looking at the south. |
|
In Cocconato
stands Cascina Rosengana, a very charming agriturismo. |
|
After 6
kilometers we reach Murisengo, one of the ‘truffle’ villages,
where it will be a pleasure to visit “Tempo Abitato” – a
very charming show room |
|
Driving towards
Gabiano we reach the Piagera fruit and vegetable market |
|
Now we go
towards Cantavenna passing through Gabiano.
Here we can admire the imposing castle, dominating the
village from the top of the hill.
We can also admire the San Pietro church, of medieval age.
The roman origin of the place is confirmed by the finding of
a mileage column with a double inscription of Diocleziano
and Massimiliano, and of Valentiniano and Valente: now it
can be admired at the Leone Museum in Vercelli..
After a few kilometers we reach Cantavenna.
The village is in a wonderful position on the last part of
Monferrato hills looking at the planes and the Po river
valley. Its name derives from a ligurian language and means:
a place near the water. |
|
Through a
panoramic Monferrato hillroad we go back to Camino. Its
imposing castle, built in the XI century and very well
preserved and restored, with a gothic tower 40 meters tall
and surrounded by a wonderful park, is one of the most
beautiful and interesting castles in Monferrato.
From here we conclude our itinerary going back to Ca’ San
Sebastiano. |
